You won’t believe but these Windows Operating System processes have been always in the processes of my brain. I am a computer geek and all time on my laptop or computer online. Few years back - there used to be always questions in my mind about processes. Sometimes, my laptop used to start acting weird and show so many processes running when I am running only couple of applications. Even you must have been in such situation in past or may be even now. So there is something I am bringing up which is useful to all of us.
By the way, I have decided to bring up some technical stuff which we really need to know but don’t due to unavailability of right resources. I want to make this blog full of useful information so that rather than searching online, next time onwards I would search my own posts in past.
Now you guys tell me, do you know working of windows operating system processes? Can you differentiate between svhost.exe and svchost.exe? which one is good and which is bad or both are good or both are bad? Believe me, we don’t look at the names so keenly, but there is a huge difference between these two processes for example.
Svchost.exe is generic host process for Win32 Services used for administering 16-bit-based dynamically linked library files (DLL files) including other supplementary support applications. That means this process is SAFE.
Svhost.exe is a high risk red alert process which is registered as the W32.Mydoom.I@mm worm. Few years back, this virus is distributed via the Internet through e-mail and comes in the form of an e-mail message, in the hopes that you open its hostile attachment. Now here is something you should be aware of that, it’s not safe process but your computer system is affected by bad virus or spyware. I have taken this information from a very informative website I came across recently and you can check out more at the links above.
Note: By the way, I have done a good research on Spyware as well, and I can write a detailed post about anti-spyware applications - I have used many once my laptop was affected by a spyware and no one from the Infrastructure team of the organization could also help me out. Finally I had figured that out how to remove that spyware. If you have any questions about it, please comment - and I would jump in to help you.
The whole process library topic is a vast topic itself to discuss and someone creating a full website as a resource to all possible common processes is no surprise. I browsed almost all common processes I was looking in the process manager and I realized that there are many useless processes running on my system and eating up memory for no reason. I had questions about ccsvchst.exe but realized that it’s safe process running for Norton Antivirus. It’s really interesting to know which processes are running for what purpose.
How to know the processes running on your computer or laptop?
- Press Ctrl +Shift + Esc to open Windows Task Manager
- You might be taken to “Applications” running on your system
- Just next to “Applications” tab, there is a “Processes” tab, click on that
- You would see all the processes running on your system, with details like CPU usage, memory usage of all processes. You can sort the processes as per high CPU usage or memory usage and see who is eating up your system.
- If you see, some of the applications or processes you don’t need, you can right click on the process and select “end process” or “end process tree”.
I keep my laptop on almost 24 hours, so the processes on my laptop get accumulated even if I am not using any application. Or sometimes the processes start automatically with windows start up. Bottom line is you should be watching your process manager frequently, and if you don’t know what processes are what purpose, you can use the resource that I found out on process library.
