Top Commentators List Will Change Every Week

This is kind of announcement for my regular readers that I have decided to change the top commentators list every week from the coming Monday or simply June month.

I have been passing on the link love to the top commentators of the month since last month because I feel they deserve it. The regular commentators show their loyalty to the blog by subscribing to your blog, revisiting the posts and adding their valuable inputs. You would understand how important it becomes after you read couple of top posts under most commented posts on right side bar.

While we discuss about comments from readers, I can quickly summarize my opinion about the groups I form:

  1. Passive comments. These comments are done if the reader like the post and just wanted to compliment. Unfortunately, you have to be very careful while approving such comments as these can be made up to look like real compliments but can be just spammish comments from link builders
  2. Active comments. These comments often come from people who come to your blog searching something and then have more questions in your mind. I have been helping such commentators going beyond extra mile and emailing them solutions to their problems if needed [when screenshots etc are needed or when they contact me through contact us page]. These comments are also from your regular visitors or subscribers that are interested to interact with you or fellow commentators. Every blogger love these kind of comments.

I would encourage both kinds as long as passive comments are real readers as well. Alright, so I decided last night to change few settings in top commentators plugin options and update the top commentators list every week. I believe this would be accepted by everyone out here as it will see the real regular commentators on the list. What do you think? Would you like to see this change?

I’m curious if you review all of your comments, and if you delete any, and if so how many (percentage). While I admit I sometimes comment to get a link, I only comment when I think I have something relevant to add to the post. Nothing bugs me more than seeing comments like “nice post”, or “good point”, or “I agree”… I appreciate that it takes time and effort to write an interesting post, and it takes at least a little time to read a post and type a RELEVANT, VALUE-ADDING comment. So can you tell us if you delete comments and what percentage it is?
PS. I’m still wondering it you ever saw the shuttle launch?

I admit that I am one of those people who leaves comments partially to get attention and some traffic, but I try to have something somewhat relevant to say and I am someone who doesn’t care for the short “nice post” or “good job” sort of comments.

I’m not sure about the changing of the top commenters every week. In some cases, it would give more people an opportunity to get on the list (especially towards the end of the month) and at the same time, the real regulars will have a tougher time staying in the top spot.

Top commentator is a good plugin but in terms of rewarding your best commentators I would prefer that you had left the “dofollow” plugin on, the downside of course is that then you would have far more spam to sift through.

The simplest solution is perhaps removing every irrelevant comments and those “I agree..nice post…I don’t agree…” without giving exact reasons why they said that, so spammers won’t get any chance to be on the list

hmm..I think this top commentators thingy will definitely draw more readers to revisit your site everyday if they want to get a link from that. Whether it will get spammed or not has to depends on how the moderator filter the comments. If they do it straight, i guess the post and comments will only be more and more valuable because everyone digging their head hard to think of something relevant to write in:)
