I have never had an experience of shared hosting coz I always felt that it was some sort of a compromising situation. As it can happen that you end up getting on the wrong side just because you share the hosting with a site that might have some objectionable content. But, reading this article give a feeling that if you are careful enough, then you can be rest assured that all gonna be well.

Thanks for the tips. these guys can get dodgey at times.

Good tips. My host shocked me by calling and giving a personal thank you with no attempt at upselling or pressure. Great service like that is pretty rare these days.

I certainly fit the “high on enthusiasm and low on cash” criteria! :) Thanks for the post.

whoa wait so if one site on the hosting company is blacklisted (ip) so will yours?

One more important tip. If you use shared hosting always backup your data. I lost my blog lately just because my hosting provider disappeared. Good tips anyway

I actually did this for my business website and hosted a counter-strike clan also with it. No one ever noticed. hehe

Thanks for the suggestions on shared hosting of websites. Your ideas were very practical and yes, verify the authenticity of the hosts before you plan to share the site with them.

25314. Web Hosting Reviews said in November 14th, 2008

No, the first tip in the list doesn’t sound right anymore nowadays. Why? Let me explain - When you signup to a web host on short term (example, three months), you don’t enjoy free setup fees and setup fees isn’t refundable.

Let’s take Bluehost as our example.

Say Imagine that you go with Bluehost 3 months hosting plan. The cost you pay will be $69.85 ($9.95/mo x 3 + $30 setup fees + $10 domain registration). Say that you’re unhappy with Bluehost and decide to ask for a refund within the first 30 days, the refund you’ll get back: a domain registered under your name and $9.95 x 3 = $29.85. Loses = $40 ($69.85 - $40).

If you refund after the trial period, say the day 31st, your refund amount will be $9.95 x 2 = $19.9. Loses = $49.95.

Now if you read my post and go for Bluehost’s 24 months plan. The dollars you pay upfront will be $190.80 (Official price $7.95 x 24, domain fees and setup fees waived). If you refund within the first 30 days, here’s what you will get: a domain registered under your name and $180.80 ($7.95 x 24 - $10 domain registration). Money lost = $10.

Now if you go with 24 months plan after trial period, say again, day 31st after your purchase? Here’s how much you can refund under Bluehost pro-rated refund policy: $172.85 (7.95 x 23 - $10 domain registration). Money lost = $17.95.

Now what if you refund your 24 months plan after trial period, say again, day 31st after your purchase? Here’s how much you can refund under Bluehost pro-rated refund policy: $172.85 (7.95 x 23 - $10 domain registration). Money lost = $17.95.

So which’s wiser plan? Is paying upfront for your hosting a bad idea? Don’t think so.

I personally have never had a problem with shared hosting as yet. I’m with Godaddy and they have been fine. They repond pretty quick to emails.

Avoid resellers if you can: we should check if they have their own hsoting or they got rented servers !

that’s the point

25388. Paul said in November 18th, 2008

We currently use Bluehost and think that the service is great however if we get a tremendous amount of traffic on a single day it crashes. I can’t wait for the day we have our own server.

25410. Merapu said in November 20th, 2008

how to know whether the hosting company is a reseller or not?

25516. Red said in November 28th, 2008

There are a few shared hosts, but there are a ton of bad hosts too. Customer service and tech support mean as much as uptime and bandwidth.

25538. Jason said in November 30th, 2008

And if you gonna use a script for your website, ask if the script can work on their servers.

Thanks for the info. I really couldn’t find any shared hosting that has no upfront fees ?? Would be thankful if you could share some recommended from your experience.

I also must add that you need to check how many domains and mysql bases are allowed if you planning to host more than one site there.
Nice sum up by the way!
