Wow, I ran TextTrust’s report on my website and found two spell mistakes. When I received the report, I was wondering how come I have two spell mistakes when I use Firefox’s default spell checker.

I realized that these two mistakes are in the comments to the post. Whoaa!

The report is really useful for everyone guys.

Good links! I use Microsoft Word, which catches a lot of my errors. I still find errors here and there, but I review my content enough that I probably don’t need these tools.

Any free alternatives to TextTrust?

722. fre3ze said in October 29th, 2007

One of the main reasons i am using firefox is because of the in-built spell checker. I have been learning german for the past two years and my english spelling have really gone week and being a webmaster having a good command on english helps a lot.

The online tools you mentioned are pretty good as well….

734. Life is Colourful said in October 29th, 2007

Hey fre3ze, thanks for stopping by and I am glad that you liked the tools.

751. omnipotent said in October 29th, 2007

I fully agree that spelling errors can affect readers’ perception on the quality of the article. It may even put readers off from reading a very good piece of work. I have submitted an article to Ezine and they
also have a spell-checker handy.

754. Watch Free Anime Episodes said in October 30th, 2007

You only get one chance to make a good first impression. Spelling correctly is certainly a step in the right direction!

772. modified cars uk said in October 30th, 2007

Good post - spelling isnt my strong point and I have always relied on firefox to notice my mistakes - but textrust is good - *trying out*

791. Cojito said in October 30th, 2007

information is way more important than spelling. if you can tell me how i can be rich, or find a hot girlfriend, or regrow my hair, then i’ll read your site no matter how bad you spell.

that said, i’m a writer. i end up doing a lot of editing because i take pride in my work. so thanks for that TextTrust link. i’m going to check it out.

801. Life is Colourful said in October 30th, 2007

Cojito, that was true at certain extent. Of course, we don’t mind if a person knows proper language or grammar if he / she is knowledgeable enough to communicate us some valuable information. It’s for the information which is generic on blogs where probably we deal with not so valuable information at times.

814. Free Blogging Resources said in October 31st, 2007

I love using Firefox for exactly that reason, the spellchecker.

If I see a site with lots of grammar or spelling mistakes I immediately run as far away from it as possible.

855. Sirius Lee said in November 2nd, 2007

I’ve always been taught that correct spelling is a must in any document if it is to be taken seriously. Now I know that not all of us have impeccable spelling skills, but that shouldn’t be a reason to let a few errors slip by, not when we have excellent applications out there to help us with this. Personally, I use Word, but the ones you suggested are just as good. Thanks for sharing with us the tools you use.

867. Cifra said in November 2nd, 2007

You think that’s bad (Peter Griffin FTW).
I write in bot henglish and slovenian It’s a huge challenge, because the spell checker desn’t always work. Proof reading saves lives!

869. Questrade said in November 2nd, 2007

I also use FF to spell check my post articles. It’s true that when you read a blog post with spelling errors, it makes you want to stop reading as the focus is diverted.

876. StumbleProxy said in November 2nd, 2007

Thanks for those great tools. They helped me a lot for correcting my spelling mistakes.

908. Gauhar said in November 4th, 2007

A wrong spelling can send your reputation crashing. i always check my posts using Google Toolbar, and proofread blog posts.

Google Toolbar on Firefox is very useful, and has a number important functions. I did have IESpell extension when I had IE as my default browser.

Thanks for sharing very useful information n

947. Free one way text links said in November 5th, 2007

Spellcheck is fantastic but make sure you have the correct language selected. US English is very different to UK English.

958. Paul said in November 5th, 2007

Nothing makes you look dumber than misspellings can. (Some can be funny too though).

Always run a spell check on posts you make and if you can stop others doing it on your blog then it makes it look more professional.

960. Brendon said in November 5th, 2007

I can’t even begin to count how many times I’ve seen professional sites have spelling mistakes on the simplest words. Whether it’s a personal blog or a Fortune 500 gateway, PLEASE, people, use spellcheck!

961. Dameon said in November 5th, 2007

I agree with Guahar. In many forums it is inappropriate to spell wrong on purpose. This way of writing is usually called “chat speak”. Thanks for the spellchecker URLs.

979. SeoTopper said in November 6th, 2007

Such a nice blog having good information about Blog Post.

982. FashDesigns said in November 6th, 2007

Yes i truly agree with you. Having a spell check done before posting is very much necessary.. Now-a-days many blogging systems have a spell check inbuilt like WordPress

Some people seem to do just fine even though their spelling is horrible.

I find that poor spelling diminishes my confidence in the writers character. So I too agree that it has a noticable long term effect on the credibility of the author..

1036. Romano said in November 7th, 2007

Many thanks for precious info

1037. Piper said in November 7th, 2007

You’re right, spelling is definitely easy to fix. The real problem, and the one that makes bloggers look far worse (in my mind) is grammar. I’ll read through half a dozen spelling errors (typically assuming they’re just typos), but if I see something like “PPC ads is good for getting the word out about you’re site,” I’m out of there.

1108. Selbourne said in November 8th, 2007

Word document has always been handy for me. So type on word –> copy paste on notepad to remove any formating –> paste it where ever :)

1153. Joedel said in November 10th, 2007

I personally prefer using microsoft word too. I get to check not only the spelling of each word in my blogpost but also the grammar of my sentences. Is there any tool you can recommend, other than MS Word, that also does grammar check?

1162. Kris said in November 10th, 2007

Hi,
I work in Firefox 2.0, so I don’t really worry about spellcheck and stuff like that. Even if I’m not sure of the in-built spell check tool in Firefox, there is always the option of typing it in MS Word and then copy, past it into the site. :)

1164. Money Maker said in November 10th, 2007

I always use to do that

1208. Pop Psychotronics said in November 10th, 2007

I just checked out the tools you mentioned in your post. I’m most comfortable with the built-in spell checker that comes with Firefox. Next to that is the IESpell extension for Internet Explorer. But Word will always be a favorite of mine. Thanks for sharing.

1426. Travel Blog said in November 14th, 2007

Yeah.. the only weakness of FF is that is doesn’t check grammar errors.

1594. Human Edited Directory said in November 19th, 2007

There are words that FF still don’t recognize as dictionary words. Like the word blogpost.

1604. Free Forex Tips said in November 19th, 2007

I always write my posts in OpenOffice before posting it to my blog as this has an ongoing spellchecker.

My main difficulty is deciding whether to cater to UK or US visitors when spelling certain words as I’m from the UK but most of my visitors come from the US.

Spelling has always been a big problem to me when i try to write it in english, since it is not my first language and not to mention about grammar, my worst nightmare. I do learn a tip from a friend saying that before posting any article try to write it first on Microsoft Word and then check spell it. Anyway, great post and i’ll sure check out those online spell checker.

3039. Tammy Blanchard said in December 18th, 2007

I always have someone read my article before I post in my blog. This allows them to check for grammar too, which is harder for a computer to auto-correct.

Well, in fact, there is. Text talk !

Firefox has a great spell check plug-in, no excuses really.

Thank you! I wish more bloggers would take this advice seriously. Bad spelling mistakes and grammar mistakes drop your level of professionalism in a really big way and too many bloggers don’t take it seriously enough. The occasional grammar mistake is unavoidable, and maybe the occasional spelling mistake. But things like using “their” instead of “there” (or the other way around) should be proofread and double checked. It just gives you a bad name if you don’t take copy seriously.

indeed. that’s one reason i use firefox. i love the fact that it spellchecks while i browse.

25196. judith said in November 7th, 2008

Spelling! One of my pet moans of the moment. First of all, I’m no great speller, but I do have a dictionary and know how to use it. For me the relationship between a dictionary and spellcheck is a bit like that between a map and sat.nav. I prefer a map.
The difference between US English and UK English is an annoyance, but my real problem is so-called ‘text speak’. I have a friend who insists on using it in her e mails. It takes me twice as long to read them and I cringe at some of the ’spelling’.
Having said all that I know some clever people can’t spell, it isn’t a crime and I would never right anyone off just because of that. But it really does get me wound up to see a fascinating and complex language falling into disrepair. I may go for a lie down now!

Spell check is very important before we post up the article, it shows professional to our blog. For spell check tool, I think firefox has this features? Because whenever there is typo error, the wrong word will be underlined, so I just right click the word and check for correction.

I do prefer if there is any grammar checking tool, because my english is not as good as you all. :P

Any recommendation?

Regards,
Lee
