I had a talk with TUK [The University Kid] few days back about sponsoring a blog contest he was planning to host. I thought there might be few more of them in single digits and we would have a decent contest held up for all the readers. Nothing more apart from this. But all my expectation were torn off after Jason actually published his post on the blog contest. It WAS the longest blog contest post I have read as of today.
TUK has been topping in my RSS subscribed blogs, taking over few oldies and getting my attention. I admire this kid being so young and not waiting to grab the opportunity on knocking the door but making the opportunities knock it. He will certainly go a long way. I have been reading him regularly since last couple of months and commenting on his blog regularly.
So Jason decided to come up with multi-sponsored contest and gave you an opportunity to make multiple your entries by doing very small job. The best one I would suggest is to blog about this contest and earn 6 points. Being in his top commentators list will earn you 3 points, and subscribing his blog and commenting on this blog contest post will earn few more points. Huh, last month it was easy for me to end up in his top commentators’ list but this month the contest post making it difficult for me :).
Well, here is what we are sponsoring:
- One 125 x 125 banner spot for one month advertising worth $30
- One detailed review on this blog worth $40 [with discounted price. We normally charge $60 for this detailed review but these two months are SALE months, and I think that’s working looking at our February earnings]
- 500 Entrecard credits, we have given these entrecard credits in one of the contests we held in January month as well.
Here is the price list for you to look at. Make sure your take a glass of water, as it’s a big list to scroll through.

While going through the prize list, one thing grabbed my attention.
One Custom Done Sketch By The Pencil Sketch And Art Blog
This is something interesting than regular advertising, reviews, cash prices. I personally liked this price because of being an artist myself and knowing what it takes to make such sketches. I recently had got my sketch done in The Universal Studios but it was more like Caricature than a real sketch. I framed it and put up on the wall at my home currently, and won’t mind to put up one more by Sue.

One thing, which always make me wonder economics in internet is that we have these competitions, where you can win 125×125 ad spot for one month and it is suppoesd to be worth xx dollars.
This is all fine and dandy, if website has more or less queue of advertisers, who wants to get their ad shown in that particular spot, but if that is not the case, then we can question what is the real value of a spot, which normally has ‘free ad space’ or something similar in it.
As an concrete example… I’ve never sold private ad space in my blog, but as far as I know, I could say that I will donate one 125×125 ad spot for competion xyz and list USD50 without offering any hard facts on why it would be worth it.
If we want to look it from another angle… you have 125×125 Project Wonderful as spot in here, which currently says that I could buy that spot for 10c. Unless some would start competing, I could buy that spot for USD3.10 for whole month (instead of suggested USD30).
