Are you facing the same problem what I am facing since many days. Rather I was so frustrated because of this IE crash that I stopped closing IE windows if accidentally open. Just for your information, I use Windows Vista operating system. So it was a combination of Windows Vista and Internet Explorer 7.0. For many days, I assumed it’s the combination that is responsible for this IE crashes. But there was some different reason.
How IE crash used to happen?
At least in my case, when I close the Internet explorer window anytime [whether the window is loading something or stopped loading], IE used to crash in a second. It’s each and every time.
I found out what could be the probable cause?
Most of the times, IE just used to stop without showing any probable cause but just a while back I saw an error related to Skype Add-on. That made me to look into the Add-Ons I have installed for I.E. 7.0. There was Skype Add-on installed to along with others.
How to fix IE crash problem?
- Find out the if you have Skype Add-On installed. You can do that by going to Internet explorer’s options like Tools -> Manage Add-ons -> Enable or Disable Add-ons. Here look for Skype Add-on.
- Disable this Add-on and restart Internet explorer
If still the internet explorer is giving the same problem, you can also remove Skype Add-on.
- Right click on the tool bar [where you are seeing the website tabs]
- Go to Customize Command bar -> Add or Remove commands.
- In this Customize Toolbar window, on right side, you would see “Current toolbar buttons”, move up the “Skype” button by using the “Move up” button on the right
- Close this window, and you shall see the Skype button right in front of you on the tool bar.
- Uninstall the add-in from the add-in menu shown here in this image.
- Restart Internet Explorer and you shall not see this IE crash problem again
Let me know what’s your experience.

Thanks this answers the question of whether or not it was my local system. I tried everything and ended up reformating but it didn’t help.
