its good idea to refer to web hosting rating website before purchasing web hosting, but i think most of web hosting rating sites are biased towards those sites which pay them higher affiliate commision.

If your web host is bad then your site is bad. We will be switching to our own hosting soon and I believe that is the best way to go. But you have to have the money to do so.

I agree that you get what you pay for so you have to keep this in mind while looing for a hosting provider.
These guys HostingIncentive have some pretty good information also.
