You have some good basics there, but you should link to a few of the places where we can do this research to find out some of these things.

What about forum signature links? Are they quality backlinks or are they only good for traffic?

Forum signature links are good if they are DOFOLLOW. But if not, they would majorly contribute to traffic depending upon your post count everyday and reputation in the forum.

Nice post. I’m quite new about link building. How to find out if a website has it’s link on .edu or .gov websites? By checking the source or there are another ways?

Thank you for the idea of putting my webname as my user name while leaving comments to increase SEO. Nice thoughts on text links as well

Most forums sigs are nofollow however there are some out there that are DOfollow so you really got to keep your eyes open! Thanks

Make sure the link is not a NOFOLLOW link. Also, don’t ignore the tagline, that is very important also.

Even though I have made a do-follow blog, I do not necessarily thing that no follow is bad. If it brings in traffic….
Also, comparing many low quality links (like from directories) with a single high quality link, I can only say. You need them all!

How do you assume Google (and other engines) value “no follow” links personally? Lots of people assume they are worthless when it comes to Google, etc but I have my doubts and definitely think google perceives value even with No Follows.

Great points. It is hard that links don’t have a single easy metric to measure them by but you did a good job of listing out the criteria to look for. How many links they have already, their topic, and their reputation are crucial elements.

interesting read. I never looked at neighborhood links. I do want to see insightful blogging and dofollow links - that’s enough for me.

The two most important factors appear to be the quality of site linking back to you and the anchor text.

A link with anchor text of “this site sucks” will not be nearly as effective as one with anchor text “Wow, Check this out!”
