Free is always good but there are chances that lot of people using the same templates, ofcourse you dont want that. So atleast strip it, do some customizations. Go for paid one if you have product or service site.

agreed, design of a website is really important, people won’t even try to stay in a complete-mess website. I usually get a free template then tweak them a little bit

Templates are only used as a whole by people who really do not have a clue. It is the same type of ‘webmaster’ (I hate that word) that uses free webhosting services. All free, simple, and not bringin in anything.
But templates are a good starting point. You have an idea, look around to see what is coming close. Download it. Strip it. Adjust it. And voila.
Sometimes I’m adjusting and adjusting until there is nothing original left anymore. But it is just easier to adjust than to start coding from scratch again.
Same thing with WordPress. After you have your blog for a while and you have been adjusting and re-arranging, you will not even recognize the original template anymore.

I think the visual aspect of a site is extremely important but unfortunately many people do not plan for a good design beforehand.
