One should put major emphasis on the fact that free themes and templates are likely to be on other sites. I have see a few other sites with similar versions of my theme (although I have done a fair amount of modifications to it for my site) and also, dereksemmler.com and betshopboy.com have the same as each other.

I have been considering creating a custom theme, but am not sure what I would want to do different than I currently have because I kinda like my theme.

Good review there ;)
I always get stuck whether to go with a paid template or a free one!

Sorry to bring Errors in front of u everytime frd … its a good review and u got helpful posts too here … but have a look at this line frd :-

“dreamtemplates.com almost come into the same category as they are providing you whooping 300 website templates for free.”

a small spelling mistake in the url (a single “s” mistake can change the whole site views) :D no offense but.

I always take templates and modify them enough so they have their own look and feel. I hate designing from scratch.

I always try to get the free one first. But if nothing match with my sense, I’ll not be objected to pay. Nice review.

Who doesn’t like free. Although free usually means that someone will most likely have it too, you are able to make several modifications to make it your own.

I usually go for free templates and then strip them and use bare bones for customization. All decent templates will eventually appear on tons of other websites which sucks.

I think the visual aspect of a site is extremely important but unfortunately many people do not plan for a good design beforehand.

As SEO says: “I usually go for free templates and then strip them and use bare bones for customization.”
Templates are only used as a whole by people who really do not have a clue. It is the same type of ‘webmaster’ (I hate that word) that uses free webhosting services. All free, simple, and not bringin in anything.
But templates are a good starting point. You have an idea, look around to see what is coming close. Download it. Strip it. Adjust it. And voila.
Sometimes I’m adjusting and adjusting until there is nothing original left anymore. But it is just easier to adjust than to start coding from scratch again.
Same thing with WordPress. After you have your blog for a while and you have been adjusting and re-arranging, you will not even recognize the original template anymore.

agreed, design of a website is really important, people won’t even try to stay in a complete-mess website. I usually get a free template then tweak them a little bit :)

I trust on myself that’s why I want to make my site template.
Thanks

Free is always good but there are chances that lot of people using the same templates, ofcourse you dont want that. So atleast strip it, do some customizations. Go for paid one if you have product or service site.
