Have you ever wondered how the file to be opened if it’s SRT file, or ICA file or BUP file – specially when some programs throws errors saying BUP file could not be opened? Did you already know what it means, what type of file it is or even which program can be used to open these files? There are tons of file extensions that are used all over the web, and not all would be known to us. Simple way to find it is to refer to the file extension Wikipedia which is available at www.file-extension.com
We have been dealing with typical file extensions since long like .doc, .txt in documents; .jpg, .gif in images and lately FLV files but we rarely need to use other files with weird extensions. That’s when we come to the halt of any file is not found or any error is thrown as I mentioned above.
Why I am coming up with this post, because while working with one of the software installation, I came across a error message about files with file extension BUP not found. With little bit online research, I realized that it was a back up file extension and given me clue how to fix the errors occurring with my files.

I liked the way the information was stored at this file extension library; neat and sorted alphabetically. When you enter into one alphabet, you would see how many pages are full of extensions with that alphabet. Really, there are 100s of them in there.
This website seems to be recognized by popular news portals like USA today, the Washington post and they are Microsoft Gold certified partner as well. This sounds good to me, anyways I would be only accessing the information that would make me understand what the file extension is all about when I need it. I have also seen that File-extensions.com was providing registry scan. I think this website is supported by Uniblue Registry Booster 2009 product; it looks like Registry Booster is their own product. I did not try it yet as my system speed is acceptable, but in case any one tries it out, feel free to update me with the change in performance.
I am glad that I could find out a resource of file extension - it’s really handy to know such websites.

Putting this in a wikipedia format is a great idea. I often look up weird extensions on Google and end up on spam/ad filled pages that entice me to download special software. Hopefully this won’t turn into that!
